A Pose That Feels Temporary

The Met describes the sitter as seeming almost ready to rise from the sofa. Her torso pitches slightly forward, and the arm near the left edge hangs low. The great spread of pale fabric across the right side makes her seat visible through its folds without placing her rigidly upright. This combination gives the portrait an in-between quality: she has paused, but the picture leaves open what action might follow. ^[1]

Her eyes meet the viewer more directly than her body does. Degas paints a small smile rather than a formal, neutral mask. The Met notes that such a visibly good-humoured expression is uncommon in his portraiture. That is the museum’s reading of the image; it should not be extended into an invented account of the sitter’s character or private life. Her identity is not documented on the owner page. ^[1]

The dark scarf is a strong compositional element. It descends from the head covering, passes around the neck and spreads across the light dress. Its folds make a series of diagonals over the sitter’s body. The red sofa provides a smaller, warmer counterweight at the left and behind her. These colour and shape relationships keep the pale dress from merging with the similarly light areas of her face and hand. ^[1]

Background and Surface

Degas set the figure against an ochre wall marked by scattered greenish touches. It is neither a detailed room description nor a smooth, single-colour backdrop. An Unknown Sitter

The Met says the woman is unidentified. It suggests she may have been someone Degas knew, noting that he made few commissioned portraits and often painted family and friends. The suggestion is plausible context, but it is not a named identification. No relation, profession or personal story can be assigned to her from the portrait alone. ^[1]

The work remained in Degas’s studio when he died in 1917 and appeared in the 1918 estate sale. The Met says the stamped signature at the lower right is evidence of that sale history. A stamp applied after the artist’s death should not be described as a signature Degas personally painted into the portrait. The museum received the painting as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Vogel in 1957. ^[1]

Looking at the Exact Work

Several Degas portraits have generic titles describing a woman, and another Met work is even titled Portrait of a Young Woman. That title similarity does not identify this painting. Look at the wide pale dress, the large black scarf, the red sofa and the speckled ochre wall, then compare the museum accession 57.171. These visible and catalogued details tie the image to a particular canvas. ^[1][2]

The picture’s interest lies in what it shows without resolving everything. We can observe a woman turning and smiling, the movement implied by her pose, and Degas’s contrasts of dark fabric and pale dress. Her name and thoughts remain unknown. Holding that boundary lets the painting’s visual choices carry the page without making the sitter a character in an invented story. ^[1]
